You think I have nothing to offer you but pain.

Only I know – You love pain.
Pain reminds you the joy you felt, was real.
Shibari is an erotic form of bondage that developed out of the traditionally Japanese military/police binding-craft called Hojōjutsu. Just like in any BDSM scenario, the sessions take place within a setting that all parties involved have consented to. The active person tying the other person is called Rigger, while the passive, tied person, is called (Rope) Model. Shibari bondage isn’t about immobilising and creating a sadomasochistic scene as it is the case in BDSM. Shibari can be many things. Technical, sensual, dynamic, erotic, exposing, presenting. The main thing, most of the time, is the dynamic between the two people involved, the feeling of the rope, on your skin or in your hand, and the aesthetic that is created. The forming of the body in different positions and poses. Experienced Rigger and Models often present the results of the sessions in so called Suspensions.
(If you’re reading this, Poebelpeople, I love you so much, you mean the world <3).
I was lucky enough to meet more and more likeminded people who were just as intrigued by Shibari as I was, saw its potential, had already had some experiences with it. People who wanted to practice tying someone, for whom I was able to model, and likewise people who trusted me enough to be tied by me (If you’re reading this Poebelpeople, I love you so much, you mean the world! <3). It was simply the perfect environment for a switcher like me – because I quickly realised that I was similarly interested in the active and passive part of it all.
As a student in her early twenties I don’t have to money to pay for workshops and weekend courses to learn more than the first few knots (Sugar Mummies and Daddies, hit me up!). So I’m trying to make the best of the few things I’ve learned so far. That way I have time to think about important questions and details. On the technical side: how do I want to practice this craft? How do I guide the rope? What’s the ideal pace, how tight, how loose should I tie a person? How do I free them of the rope without making them feel like a present that is being unwrapped by an ungrateful little kid? Where is my pull/rope putting pressure on their body? Just as important and tightly bound to the technical side is the emotional side, the relationship to the other person: which wavelength are we on? Are we sharing a sensual moment, a moment of softness and peace? Will we let sexual tensions develop between us? Is there an unequal power exchange between us?
A lot of times, tying someone and being tied, is like a conscious hug to me. When I’m tying someone, it can be like holding them in a soft embrace, it can be a way of saying: Feel me. Feel the rope on your skin, Feel yourself. Feel your body. Feel how me and the rope don’t want to let go of you, because we have love for you and feel deeply connected to you in this moment. Even as a Rope Model, despite the harshness of the rope and the perceived roughness of the act of tying someone, it can feel soft. Maybe a bit like yoga or meditation. I can feel every inch of my body that is touched by the rope. I’m in constant dialogue with my body, initiated by another person, whom I trust and know that they only want the best for me. The restrictive rope forces me to be in this moment, to accept it, to accept myself in the exact way I am sitting there – maybe with my hands behind my back and the ropes wound around my body.
Seeing the rope as an extension of my arm is also interesting when looking at the power dynamics and the pain that can emerge.
Being able to tap into my sadistic tendencies with another person who enjoys the pain, adds a whole new level to the conversation. Because it’s an exchange. I pull the rope extra tightly, pressing on pressure points, let the person stay in uncomfortable positions and challenge them that way, to give into the pain, sparking pleasure for them. – At the same time, I feed my own inner darkness, this deeply routed need that is inside of me; I get pleasure out of this power that is gifted to me. Similarly the affection between me and the other person isn’t lost in the process. I want to satisfy the pleasure of pain that the other person feels, you might even call it a kind of pain caused by/through the affection we have for each other. This goes nicely with the above mentioned request: „ Feel how me and the rope don’t want to let go of you, because we have love for you and feel deeply connected to you in this moment.“ The pain will intensify this Feeling, the rope simply functions as the messenger.

All our lives are influenced by suffering, strokes of fate, loss, grief – it all coming in different shapes and sizes. A lot of times it’s hard to put into words what you are going through. With big feelings like this, you can feel lonely, I know I often do. When I’m in the ropes, I often feel this moment of surrender, of helplessness, of overwhelming emotions – while my Rigger is with me. They see me, hold me, look at me. I can suffer. I suffer and I’m not alone with my suffering. I experience emotional closeness in a situation I instinctively feel like I normally have to isolate myself. And I don’t have to explain myself, words are unnecessary, because this non-verbal level of communication is created, a silent agreement that we can be real and naked in front of each other. When I feel physical pain, it can happen that I reach this almost ecstatic meditative state.
It doesn’t always turn out to be this intense, and I don’t expect it to. And the interesting thing is: every person is different, with every new Shibari session with a new person, I’ll learn something else about that person and about myself. There is always something to discover. And of course, this isn’t for everyone, and it doesn’t have to be. (But in case you see someone tied to a tree in the park this summer – come say hi!)
I think that my whole life I’ve been searching for intensity. That’s what Shibari is all about for me. To be seen and to see others. To be close to them in the physical and psychological sense. To strip naked in front of each other and be in your own darknesses together, but feeling soft and secure through it all.
